Early History of Bhimgarh Fort

Originally, Bhimgarh Fort was constructed using clay.
Later, one of the descendants of Maharaj Rishipal Rana, the founder of Reasi, rebuilt the fort with stone to make it stronger and more durable.

According to historical records, Reasi was established by Raja Bhim Dev in the 8th century. For centuries, it remained the capital of the Bhimgarh State before merging with the princely state of Jammu in 1822.

Renovation Under Maharaja Gulab Singh

In 1817, Maharaja Gulab Singh of Jammu began renovating Bhimgarh Fort.
The work continued until 1841 and significantly improved the fort’s defenses.

As part of the renovation:

  • A new main entrance gate was constructed

  • A 50-meter-long stone wall, nearly one meter thick, was added

  • The fort became more resistant to enemy attacks
